Sydney Uni Latin Summer School

This week I recieved some brochures for the Sydney Uni Latin Summer School. The summer school is held every year, for people of all different ages and levels of Latin ability. I taught the beginners class at the beginning of this year (which was a lot of fun) and had a whole range of different people in my class- a year 7 student whose big brother was there and who wanted to come along as well, a couple of uni students doing ancient history who needed to learn a bit of Latin for their studies, a mum who wanted to find out a bit about this wierd language her daughter was learning, and an older couple who wanted something to stimulate their brains in retirement.

It's a great thing to attend if you're planning on doing Latin for the HSC, as you get a bit of grammar revision, but more importantly you get to read a wider range of texts than we would normally have time to do in school. The selections for level 3A (about the level you would be at if you're currently in year 11/12) look particularly good this year- they'll be reading bits out of Aeneid book 5, Metamorphoses book 1 and Catullus 64.

Hello Mr. Mo! Sorry I didn't ask you on Thursday - I was feeling a little tizzy, as you might have been able to tell - but how was your New Zealand trip? Oh, and for Latin Summer School, do people from Year 12 going into uni still go to it? I mean, can we? See, I changed my courses for uni, I've put International Studies at UNSW first now, which means no Latin for me at uni, if my preferences stay that way =( But I still really want to continue with Latin! So, do many Year 12 people go to it? I wonder if I could convince Laura to come...

Anyhow, I should be studying or somesuch, so I'll see you round!

I'd love to go, but will be away that week! I've been getting into a little Latin reading Augustine recently.

Emma, NZ was great (thanks for asking) and of course you can still go to Summer School- it's open to anyone at all. I'm not sure if there'll be many people there who've just finished their HSC, but there'll be people of a similar age and similar Latin ability there.

Don't forget 3B, where you can read about a Theban king getting ripped to pieces by a bunch of drunken women. ;-)

Nice plug JM. We'll miss you there this year...

Hi Mr Morrison! I forgot to ask you about Summer School, but I am asking now, so on Monday will you please tell me if I should go and all that?
